Hi there! I’m Kimberly Laurel, a word-obsessed editor from Upstate New York. I specialize in copyediting and proofreading.
I run Trusty Bookmark Editorial Services, helping authors, publishers, and university presses with the manuscript editing process. I am well versed in The Chicago Manual of Style (and experienced conforming to various house style sheets), and I constantly strive to fine-tune my skills through frequent courses, online classes, and self-paced studying.
Helping Authors
My objective is to support my authors in publishing their work with confidence. To that end, I provide help at all stages of the editing process.
As you work through your writing and self-editing process, my social channels (@trustybookmark) and email newsletter provide motivation and encouragement as well as advice and tips on productivity, writing craft, and the editing process.
When you’re ready for a professional editor’s eye on your work, I offer a number of editing services so you feel confident in the work you are putting out into the world.
My Editing Approach
I believe in partnering with each of my clients to preserve their voice and vision while ensuring clarity and a polished final product. I strive to understand *why* you’ve written this story as well as your editing and manuscript goals. (Find out more about my editing philosophy here.)
With emphasis on reader comprehension and editorial transparency, I meticulously work through your manuscript. I provide both positive and constructive feedback, while offering suggested solutions for the latter.
Education & Professional Memberships
I received my editing certification through the University of Washington. Prior to that, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) with Honors from Union College. I’ve been copyediting and proofreading technical documents for a decade, and I moved into editing fiction and scholarly nonfiction manuscripts five or so years ago.
I am a member of the following national professional organizations for editors: EFA: Editorial Freelancers Association (my profile), ACES: The Society for Editing (my profile), Northwest Editors Guild (my profile), and PEN: Professional Editors Network (my profile).
Emails, Social Media, and More
When I’m not helping clients or developing content, I’m being dragged down the street by my gigantic dog, attempting to Kondo-ize my life, or collecting jumbo mugs from which I drink way too much caffeine.
